Brigham Young was the head of the Latter Day Saints. He was a leader in the expansion of the United States to the west. He founded Salt Lake City and was the first governor of Utah. He believed in polygamy and had 55 wives and 56 children. Today people can still trace their ancestral lineage to Brigham Young, including former National Football League quarterback, Steve Young.

Young’s style of governance was autocratic, meaning he lead the people much like a dictator. He did not accept guidance from the United States government. The feds sent troupes to put Young in his place. Young resisted the assertion of power from the United States and sent his own army out to block the feds. He stopped them for an entire winter. This incident is known as the Utah War. As a result of the incident, Young was removed as governor. Buchanan later granted Young a full pardon.
